AIDMK leader VK Sasikala has been released on parole from Bengaluru jail. She has been granted a five-day parole following her application to meet her husband who recently underwent a dual organ transplantation.
Reports from The Times of India suggest that Sasikala filled and submitted an emergency parole form to seek a temporary exit from the jail. She submitted the application along with a medical certificate of M Natarajan, her ailing husband.
Sasikala was sentenced to a jail term of four years, for disproportioning assets. Along with her, two of her relatives, VN Sudhakaran and Ilavarasi have also been sentenced to jail in the same case.
This is not the first time that the AIADMK has submitted a parole application. Sasikala first submitted an emergency parole application form on October 3. However, the filed application was rejected because of insufficient submission of required documents.
Notably, her husband, 74-year-old M. Natarajan, a chronic liver disease patient, underwent dual organ transplant surgery that lasted over seven hours. During the surgery, Sasikala’s husband received a donor kidney and liver.
Natarajan is currently reported to be stable and is recovering from the surgery. The surgery took place on October 3 at the Gleneagles Global Health City in Chennai. The senior doctor at the Institute of Liver Diseases and Transplantation confirmed that his condition is stable after the surgery.
The donor kidney and liver transplanted was a 19-year-old brain-dead patient, Karthik N, who was admitted to a government hospital in Thanjavur after suffering from severe injuries in the head. Karthik, a daily wage earner, was flown to Chennai for the organ retrieval through a special air ambulance.
Sasikala has been serving a prison term since February at the Bengaluru jail after the Supreme Court of India upheld her conviction in a special court.
