Reliance JioFiber to offer 100 Mbps speed, free 100GB data for 90 days at launch
After disrupting the cellular network space in India, Mukesh Ambani-promoted Reliance Jio is now gearing up to shake the broadband space in the country. Announced in September 2016 during the launch of brand ‘Jio’, their JioFiber FTTH broadband services have been under test in select cities across India for the last six months.
Following similar strategy applied in the mobile network space, JioFiber too will be launched with a preview offer, which will offer complimentary access to JioFiber services for 90 days. Under the offer, JioFiber broadband services will offer blazing fast speed at 100 Mbps with a monthly free data of 100 GB and free access to Jio premium applications. Users will continue to get 1 Mbps speed post the 100 GB data cap. Currently, JioFibre broadband services are running trials in 5 cities – Delhi, Mumbai, Jamnagar, Pune and Chennai.
However, unlike the mobile network, to avail of JioFiber services, one will have to initially shell out Rs 4,500 as an installation charge, which will be refunded back if users choose not to continue with services post the preview offer. As part of the package, JioFiber users will also get dual-band Wi-Fi routers, which Reliance says will offer “best indoor coverage and connectivity with the Fiber Home Gateway”. Users will also be able to monitor and control their Wi-Fi remotely using a cloud link and will know get real-time information about their connection via a mobile app.
JioFiber services will be rolled out in select cities gradually, where interested users will be able to call a toll-free number to request installation, unlike Jio’s mobile services where one could walk into a store and walk out with a USIM. As the broadband space in India gears up for an overhaul, existing players like Airtel have started upgrading their infrastructure too and will in all probability offer matching speeds and offers as and when the competition starts operations.
